Automatic Cell Formation & Grading
System.
 The
Model 5300 Grading System is a quality control tool that provides
an efficient and economic method of grading cells by Capacity.
The need to grade cells has become increasingly important in
the manufacture of battery packs. In particular, battery packs
that are used in the more demanding applications that typically
incorporate Lithium or NI-MH cell technology.
The basic system can accommodate up to 256 cells. Multiple systems
can be supplied, operating from a single PC computer. The Model
5300 is supplied in a cabinet intended for bench top mounting,
which contains cell contact plates, power supplies, and measuring
and control electronics.
In operation, cells are placed into
cell trays, and the trays inserted into the test cabinet.
Cell trays are available for a range of different diameter
cells. Under the control of a single board computer in the
test cabinet, cells are subjected to a pre-programmed sequence
of charge, discharge, and rest steps. As the test proceeds,
measurements are made of current and voltage at a rate of
approximately one data point per second for each and every
cell. At the end of the test, a print out is obtained indicating
the grade classification of each cell, based on operator programmed
criteria.
Both the programming of the test, and the calculations
necessary to provide grading information, are performed through
the system PC computer. The Maccor
Windows based software allows the operator to enter one
or any number of test programs through a fill-in-the-blanks
menu screen.

At the appropriate
charge, discharge or rest step, the operator also enters the
information required for grading purposes, typically a band
of capacity measurements. From the PC computer, the operator
can start and stop tests, monitor system status, and view
real time test data on each cell.
The design of the
Model 5300 is based on the same concepts and principles of
our other proven laboratory and production battery test systems.
It therefore provides a system with high accuracy, flexibility,
ease of operation, and reliability.
